The Christmas Cliff

Well, it's that time of year again. Take a deep breath. Everybody hold hands. We can do this.

Before I got into retail, I was just a Jew watching from the sidelines as everyone around me went crazy buying and selling, getting increasingly frantic as the calendar ticked down to December 25. Sometimes I observed with envy, occasionally with pity, as friends around me checked off gift lists and suffered wrapping paper cuts, while I anticipated a day of dim sum and bad movies. Then, Paula and I opened our pet store in 1999, and suddenly we were sucked into the holiday madness. It was exhilarating, fabulous fun. Piles of Christmas catnip, stockings and sweaters and chew toys for dogs, piled up on the counter. I couldn't believe I had missed out all those years (Paula was clearly harder to convince).

Now, obviously, I'm next door and in the cookbook business, and I've gotten really good at wrapping. My favorite thing in the world is getting the right book into the right hands, so all through December I get to figure out the perfect gift for someone (Kate, too - her recommendations are golden). Of course, we have some great new cookbooks to recommend this year (Jerusalem, Canal House Cooks Every Day, Bouchon Bakery Cookbook, Vietnamese Home Cooking…I could go on and on). And don't forget the antiquarian food books we have in the shop; those can make for a very special gift.

I've finally gotten it together to move the majority of the books on my website onto e-commerce, so if you're unable to come in to my shop, these books can be yours with the click of a mouse: Signed Books, New Books, Vintage Books. We have a few more author events this year, and after that, well, let's jump off that cliff together,

New York Times writers Julia Moskin and Kim Severson were all of the former, until legendary Times restaurant critic Frank Bruni challenged them to go head-to-head in a culinary duel—a battle for dinner dominance that turned them into kitchen combatants. Armed with only $50 each, Bruni dared them to prepare a full meal for six, a showdown which he would judge for the newspaper. The thrill of battle proved too exhilarating to resist, and that initial clash turned into a yearlong kitchen war as Julia and Kim faced off to tackle the most vexing kitchen predicaments.
