As we head in to March, I feel a whole lot smarter than I did at this time last month. Sometimes, the free author events at Omnivore feel more like an extended education course, and this February felt like the epitome of that sentiment. We learned from Liz Gershman's Cuban Flavor about the food politics of modern-day Cuba, where citizens aren't allowed to grow their own food because everyone is supposed to be equally impovershed (never mind that an avocado tree would probably sprout overnight from a tossed pit in that tropical climate). We found out from Jonathan Kauffman's Hippie Food that Ed Espe Brown learned to make bread from Southern Californian Alan Tooker, and that the Zen Center was ground zero for the hippie food movement. Carolyn Tillie brought a 50 million-year-old oyster shell fossil to show off during her talk on Oysters: A Global History. And Denise Clifton, author of Tables from the Rubble, presented an amazing lecture on the history of San Francisco restaurants that survived the 1906 earthquake and still survive today. She told us about her interviews with the current owners of Liguria Bakery, Sam Wo Noodle House, and Swan Oyster Depot as we sat riveted in our seats. I feel lucky to learn so much from such great teachers, every day. In fact, during the oyster history talk, a woman in the back row kept barking out corrections to the science portion of the talk (like when Tillie said that '49ers had dined on plover eggs from the Farallones, and she kept interrupting, "Common murre! Common murre!"). When I finally turned around at the end, I found my high school marine biology teacher sheepishly smiling at me. So there you go - you can't escape education at my store.

The other highlight of February was attending the annual Antiquarian Book Fair in South San Francisco. I always love to go and scout for great cookbooks, as well as see old colleagues and meet new booksellers. I found some beautiful, rare, and simply delightful cookbooks whilst there, and they are now posted on my website. One of my favorites is the 1867 Edible Mollusks of Great Britain and Ireland, with Recipes for Cooking Them, with an elegant gold snail gilded onto the front cover.

March is upon us, as are more events. All are worth attending, but we expect you to bring your best cookie game to our March 17 Cookie Contest! Details are below - last year, we had over 40 entries, so try to think outside the (cookie) box and bake to win!
