COOKBOOK EVENT MANIA!

I'll make this brief. Because our October events page is looong. There are so many fantastic events coming up this month, I'm not sure when I'll be able to catch my breath, or even sleep. But I wouldn't do this if I didn't love it, and love it I do. Gracing our shop this month will be Jacques Pepin, John T. Edge, the owners of State Bird Provisions, Peter Reinhart, Laura Shapiro, Seamus Mullen, and many more. We're also co-hosting some wonderful off-site events, including Yotam Ottolenghi at the JCCSF (a limited number of general admission tickets were just released, so grab them up!).

We are co-hosting two events I'm particularly excited about: On Saturday, Oct. 7, Brad Thomas Parsons will be at Omnivore to celebrate (with Fernet cocktails) Distillery Cats, and next door at Noe Valley Pet Company, we will be hosting a cat adoption! Seems like a perfect match, and maybe you'll just fall in love. Later in the month, on Oct. 19, we'll toast Paul Kahan (owner of Chicago's Publican, Blackbird, and Avec) at Tofino Wines. My sister and brother-in-law own Tofino, and this is our first joint event! Tofino is a beautiful wine bar and store on Geary & Masonic, and there will be charcuterie from The Publican to snack on while we chat with Paul.

There's a lot to digest here, so dig in and enjoy the feast,

Sincerely,

Celia Sack, Owner

Fri. Oct. 20 • John T. Edge • The Potlikker Papers: A Food History of the Modern South• 6:30-7:30 p.m. FREE

Like great provincial dishes around the world, potlikker is a salvage food. During the antebellum era, slave owners ate the greens from the pot and set aside the leftover potlikker broth for the enslaved, unaware that the broth, not the greens, was nutrient rich. After slavery, potlikker sustained the working poor, both black and white. In the South of today, potlikker has taken on new meanings as chefs have reclaimed it. Potlikker is a quintessential Southern dish, and The Potlikker Papers is a people’s history of the modern South, told through its food.
